WSJ reports With layoffs being announced nearly every day, it’s easy to dwell on the possibility of losing your job. Experts say now is the time to find ways to help your company save money and keep it from losing ground. You’ll be more valuable to your firm, but even if you are eventually laid off, you’ll have something tangible to show a potential employer.”

Their suggestions?

  • Become an IT expert.
  • Monitor the web for trends  and new developments
  • Become a relationship master
  • Think of Virtual Alternatives to travel

My additions:

  • Find a renewed sense of meaning and purpose in your work
  • Include time for incubation and play in your schedule
  • Expressing yourself creatively for fun can energize your work
  • Nurture relationships at work, and  in your community (face to face and online)
  • Take additional training, maybe from an online university, to enhance your skills.
  • Have a plan to build your personal brand and increase your visibility
  • Make sure your boss  knows of your contributions
  • Hire a coach, as your confidential thinking partner
  • Spend time with young people and find out what their passions are
