What if the uncertainty you fear is actually the creative force that holds the seeds of transformation?

I invite you to pause for a moment and let that question sink in. What does it evoke in you?

Personally, that question makes my pulse quicken (is it fear or excitement?) because it asks me to find the gift in my fear. It uncovers a truth we often overlook: uncertainty isn’t just uncomfortable—it’s alive, fertile, and full of possibility.

The in-between: where transformation takes root

When you find yourself standing in the in-between—the end of one chapter and the not-yet-clear beginning of another—it’s natural for the voice of the inner critic to grow louder. It thrives on control and predictability, and it hates the unknown.

“You should have it all figured out by now,” it whispers.
“What if you make the wrong move?” it warns.

But here’s what the inner critic doesn’t know: this “in-between” space is what William Bridges calls the neutral zone—the zone of transition. It’s the very core of transformation, where the old has ended but the new hasn’t yet taken shape.

It can be a time of uncertainty and confusion, yet, when approached with curiosity and openness, the zone of transition is fertile ground for new ideas, reflection, and the first stirrings of creative breakthroughs. Like seeds germinating in darkness, new possibilities are waiting for you to uncover them.

If you find yourself in that threshold space, be gentle. Rather than rushing to resolve uncertainty, or scrolling away the discomfort or fill it with busyness. Resist. Instead, pause, notice, and be curious.

What if this uncertainty is your creative edge? What possibilities are quietly asking for attention? Pause, listen, and let it guide guide toward what’s next. Because what often looks like confusion or fear is actually the first stirring of transformation.

The “in-between” state is one of the hardest states my clients find themselves in, because there is such drive for performance, but sometimes, as they say, you have to go slowly to go fast.

Why uncertainty sparks creative growth

Psychologist Ronald Beghetto calls uncertainty a “necessary condition” for creative learning, because it invites exploration and reflection rather than repetition. When we’re not locked into predictable patterns, we become more receptive to novelty, intuition, and possibility.

In this way, uncertainty becomes a creative force: it loosens rigid structures, invites curiosity, and makes space for transformation. Neuroscience research shows that ambiguity activates brain networks responsible for divergent thinking, opening the door to new associations and insights.

The call to reinvent

Maybe you’ve felt it too—that quiet restlessness, the sense that what once inspired you no longer does. You might not have words for it yet, only a feeling that something new is calling. That’s where reinvention begins—not in having the answers, but in being willing to listen.

Whether you’re mid-career or approaching retirement, your soul is asking for more. Transitions are not just endings—they are invitations to reinvent.

My own path of reinvention

My journey of reinvention began when I felt bored and unfulfilled as a graphic designer, even though I had achieved success and won awards. My soul was asking for more. Since then, I’ve spent decades exploring creativity, innovation, and leadership development—publishing books, speaking at conferences, and working with clients across the globe.

Along the way, I’ve learned to transform fear into courage and setbacks into resilience. I’ve embraced an agile mindset and cultivated an inner sage through a multi-disciplinary set of practices, including mental fitness.

This year, I reached a milestone that was truly transformational: walking the last 120 km of the Camino de Santiago in a week—a journey that required both mental and physical strength.

What is possible when you are in the creative void?

When facing uncertainty, it’s not about fixing what’s wrong, but about listening for what’s possible. Sometimes, the first step is simply being open to discovery.
